Janemba: Redesign

janemba_front_web.jpg

This remains one of my favorite 3D pieces to date. My longtime CG brother in arms Richard Daniels and I joined forces to breathe some new life into one of my favorite Dragonball Z villains, Janemba. I tackled the design, sculpting and UV’s while Richard took on the textures, shading and lighting. The look I was going after was simple, I knew from the jump that I wanted the new look to be meaner and creeper than the original iteration. I played with a few different ideas, but once I removed the eyes from the design sketch I knew I was onto something promising.

The lengths Richard went to both in terms of his research and execution were incredible. I remember him texting me one day, saying that he’d found an octopus tentacle at the market that he thought would be the perfect source for us to derive our skin textures from. Before I knew it, Rich had the tenticle flayed out, busted out a handheld scanner and went to work! He’s a constant reminder to me that often times the best way to solve CG issues is to step away from the computer and sample the masterful design solutions nature has to offer.
